Epidemic Readiness

GZM AG is responsible for epidemic readiness in Swiss agriculture and in this work is partner to the federal government and cantonal governments; particularly in the northwest and western cantons. It is within its capacity, in extreme situations and on very short notice, to provide the safest and surest pick up services for large numbers of infectious animal carcasses.

Due to its capacity to process carcasses, GZM has been assigned with the task of epidemic readiness for 11 cantons (AG, BE, BL, BS, FR, GE, JU, NE, SO, VD, VS).

Thus, GZM is always ready with its most appropriate transport capacity. GZM has trained personnel on hand to assist the cantonal veterinary authorities in evacuation of slain animals without any risk of infection. The carcasses are then taken to the Lyss facilities for processing.

Essentially, in Switzerland - even in the event of an epidemic - no animal carcasses are incinerated. Instead, they are immediately picked up, then sterilized and processed into meat and bone meal and animal fat. The end products are then taken to be incinerated.

An appropriate organization has been developed for epidemic readiness. Specialized equipment with disinfection devices, troughs and loading vehicles are ready for collecting animals.

Epidemic readiness is of tremendous importance for the welfare and protection of human and animal health in our country.
