Meat and Bone Meal and Animal Fats (GZM Extraktionswerk AG/Extraction Plant)

The GZM Extraction Plant AG processes approximately 100,000 tons annually, with approximately two-thirds of it ending up in Switzerland’s animal waste category 1.

Category 1 residues are “risk materials” in hygienic terms (i.e., abattoir waste and animal carcasses), which according to the ABR (Animal By-products Regulation), are to be sterilized and cannot be used elsewhere in the food and feed industry or for technical purposes.

Animal by-products raw materials are as follows; about 63% water, 25% protein and 12% fat. These are ground and milled, sterilized by steam and processed into germ-free animal fat, as well as meat and bone meal; which are used for CO2 neutral fuels or fuel.

About 65 % of the animal fat produced is used by the GZM as an alternative fuel for its own steam production; resulting in the very positive effect of massive CO2 reduction; especially when compared to the use of natural gas or heating oil. Another part is raw material for biofuel, which is used and/or marketed for the CENTRAVO Logistics Fleet.

Bone meal is still used as fuel in the cement industry. There are other projects that make even better use of the product’s intrinsic value.
